We are writing to inform you of an important change to our policy regarding fractional shares resulting from corporate action allocations.
Over the next two weeks, IBKR will implement the following change: IBKR clients will now receive fractional shares in US stocks and warrants instead of cash in lieu (CIL).
What this change means:
- Some mandatory corporate actions in US stocks and warrants (such as stock dividends, stock splits, mergers, etc.) may now result in a fractional share position where you previously would have received cash in lieu of the fractional share.
- You can view any fractional share position in the same way you currently view whole shares in your account; i.e. statement, Trader Workstation, mobile app, other.
- If your account has Fractional Share Trading Permissions, you will be able to hold and close these positions in any of IBKR's trading platforms. Information on how to request Trading Permissions can be found in the links below.
- If your account does not have Fractional Share Trading Permissions, IBKR will initiate a closing transaction to liquidate the fraction in the open market. In most instances the fraction will be liquidated on the business day following the allocation. In some cases, the liquidation can be blocked or delayed causing the fractional position to remain in your account (e.g., if a trading restriction is placed on the security).
- Clients that consume files for such purposes as statements, reconciliations, or for position data should note the quantity field may now include decimals to represent fractional positions.
